Yeah, the shit he did was vile. Using humans as chess pieces to boost your own image and life is fucked up. It also happens everyday with billionaires and the uber wealthy. This country is set up to get shit off the work of people poorer than you. In his case they gave him the image that he's hard, got him street cred and in turn made him rich and famous. He gave them money and did whatever was best for HIM at the end of the day. It's the same thing Bezos does with all his factory workers making minimum wage.
His music appeals to people and sometimes the person behind the art is an awful person. Pablo "Aubrey Huff" Picasso was a misogynist like you wouldn't believe. Sinatra was a domestic abuser. Stephen Tyler got a teenage girl pregnant. Orson Scott Card compared Obama to Hitler. None of those people became suddenly unpopular. Controversy adds to popularity 90% of the time, not the opposite.
